Anyone planning to take up residence in the UK should be aware of the operations of two distinct government departments:
The Home Office - which decides through its officials at the ports of entry and at Work Permits (UK) (with or without the intervention of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office) whether an individual is physically to be allowed to enter or stay in the country.
The Inland Revenue - which is concerned with the collection of tax.
